Laura Vaughan – viola da gamba

The sublime sounds of strings abound in this display of harmony and tranquillity, virtuosity and vigour. Experience works that you have never heard before, as well as works not yet performed in such a space. Enjoy the intimacy that only a cosy space like Dante’s can provide. Marvel at the exquisite sonorities created when the talents of Laura Vaughan and David Macfarlane combine with these works by Schenck, Handel, Kuhnel and J.S. Bach.

The reverence of Newman College Chapel is ideal for a reflection of the day's events, with a candlelit celebration of chant. The concert follows the path of the ancient compline service - the service of contemplation at day's end in a Medieval monastery. It incorporates chant from the Gregorian and Orthodox traditions, the ecstatic melodies of the Medieval mystic, Hildegarde of Bingen, and an elegant French Baroque litany composed for Louis XIV's own convent at St Cyr, here performed for the first time in Australia.

This evening's concert will be warmed up by a cup of coffee supplied by only the finest, Jura coffee
